Includes accounts and account books, 1795-1820, concerning shad fishing and plantation operations at "Appomattox Manor," City Point (now Hopewell), Va., kept by Archibald Eppes; mercantile correspondence, 1797- 1841, and accounts, 1820-1841, of William Gilliam, claimant to estate of Richard Eppes (d. 1797); accounts and account books, 1806-1835, of Benjamin Cocke, relating to fishing, backsmithing, and agricultural operations at Bermuda Hundred plantation in Chesterfield County, Va., and "Eppes Island" plantation in Charles City County, Va. Also include social correspondence, 1802-1844, of Mary (Eppes) Cocke with friends at the University of Virginia and the College of William and Mary and in Prince George and Charles City counties; accounts, 1811- 1845, of Mary (Eppes) Cocke, some of a medical nature; and miscellaneous records pertaining to land in Prince George and Charles City counties, and Hopewell, Va. Papers of Richard Eppes include diaries, 1851-1896, containing details of plantation routines at "Appomattox Manor," "Bermuda Hundred" and "Eppes Island," including slave registers, inventories of agricultural equipment, livestock, and postbellum records of accounts with agricultural laborers (mostly former slaves); correspondence, 1840-1882, while a student at the University of Virginia and as a physician; his student notebooks, 1840-1844; and his accounts, 1847-1895, pertaining to agriculture and fishing at City Point. Also include cookbook, undated, and correspondence, 1854-1905, of Elizabeth Welsh (Horner) Eppes with family friends; and a diary, 1872- 1881, concerning trips to New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., drawing book, 1872-1873, and social correspondence, 1859-1918, of Josephine Dulles Eppes.
